Building Lifelong learners
Our commitment to learning runs throughout The Learning Nursery, for both children and for adults.
When planning and guiding children’s activities, we consider the different ways that children learn, and make sure that they are reflected in our practice. The EYFS defines these characteristics of effective learning as:
• playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’
• active learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements
• creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
A guiding principle is that our curriculum and the learning opportunities we plan are:
- based on the children's interests;
- rooted in open-ended play.
But adults are learners too. Our commitment to the ongoing development of our staff means that they also see themselves as part of a community of learners.
The Learning Environment
Our nursery is small and homely - many parents think of it as a 'home from home'. But, despite its size, the learning environment is vibrant and welcoming, varied and well-presented, age-appropriate and well resourced.
At this time of uncertainty, the relatively small size of The Learning Nursery ensures that your child will experience a small community with a limited number of contacts - an important consideration when assessing your child's safety.
We have three main learning spaces indoors: a pre-school room; a room for older toddlers; and a room for babies and young toddlers. We also have a kitchen where children can have snack and, at other times, do cooking activities. Outside we have four interconnected play spaces: a covered decking area that provides free-flow from the pre-school room; a linked mud kitchen area; an area dedicated to babies and toddlers; and an area mostly used by pre-schoolers.
