Families and Home Learning

Our learning community

"Parents speak highly of the care their children receive. Staff share information with parents about children's learning and how this can be further supported at home. Parents comment on how happy they are with the progress their child has made since starting at the nursery" (Ofsted 2023)

The Importance of Community

We want all children and families to have a strong sense of belonging. Community is very important to us and is at the core of our curriculum so children and their families feel wanted, safe and appreciated for who they are.

Home Learning

Understanding your child's learning and development
The Government published the document 'What to Expect When' a few years ago. It helps parents to understand how their child's learning develops as they grow, and importantly makes suggestions of what parents can do to support their child's learning at home. It is available in hard copy at Amazon, or you can download a version here.

Developing a love of reading
At nursery, we want to instil a love of reading for all children and prioritise opportunities to read books throughout the day. Stories allow us to engage our imaginations, consider how others may feel, explore and learn new vocabulary and practice spoken language.
How can parents support this?
With older children, reading a book with your child, maybe at bedtime, is a good way to develop language skills, expand their vocabulary, and instil a love of reading. With younger children, 'reading' is closer to looking at a book with your child, talking about the pictures, but there is little need to read all of the words!
But which books? Which books are they familiar with at nursery? A list of our children's best loved books can be downloaded here.

The benefits of singing with and to your child
Singing well-known nursery rhymes has lots of benefits for your child's learning. It can support speech and language development; develop thinking and memorisation; help with early reading and comprehension; build social and communication skills; promote physical activity and motor skills; and nurture creativity. Why not make singing nursery rhymes a regular feature of your home learning?
